What we’re looking for

If you’re a current UAL student, submit examples of your work and you could be commissioned to design an exclusive wrapping paper for not just a shop.

Five students will be selected to work with not just a shop to create a range of UAL-exclusive wrapping paper that will only be sold online and will be used for our online gift-wrapping service. We’ll produce and manufacture the commissioned designs into the final printed wrapping paper.

Selected students will be assigned one of the following categories:

  1. A celebratory theme focusing on occasions such as birthdays, engagements, congratulations, new home, new baby and graduation.
  2. Abstract design that will be suitable for a wide variety of occasions.

Who can enter

Current student studying at one of our Colleges on a BA, MA, PHD or FdA level course. Disciplines include but are not limited to: Graphic design, communication design, photography, painting, drawing, illustration, sculpture, animation

Deadline

Upload your application by 10am, Monday 12 June 2023.

Examples of your work should be submitted as a PDF, Word document or JPEG. Maximum file size is 3MB.

Final commissioned designs will need to be an Illustrator, EPS or Tiff file.

Criteria for selection

Your work will be reviewed and selected based on the following:

  • High quality production or crafting skills.
  • Creativity, uniqueness, and a consistency in style.
  • Commercial viability, for example, imagery should have wide public appeal and avoid niche themes.

How you’ll be paid

You’ll be paid via ArtsTemps for up to 10 hours of work on your commissioned gift wrap design:

  • 7 hours work for 3 initial designs, plus 3 hours work for final design.
  • Total of 10 hours work per illustration (Task Rate Two) - £151 total.

You'll also get:

  • Professional photography of your gift wrap design.
  • 10 sheets of your gift wrap design.

Terms and conditions

This commission is open to current students from all UAL colleges and courses (including international students)

You can submit one application per student. Each gift wrap design commission is to be completed by one student and not a collaborative effort

Examples/portfolio should clearly show the students art style and be representative of their work. If selected, students may be required to adapt their initial design ideas to increase suitability and commercial appeal (in agreement with the entrant)

Examples can be produced in any medium but must be submitted as a high-resolution digital image, collated into one PDF, a word document or JPEG (max 3MB)

The winning students will need to supply their gift wrap designs to not just a shop as an Illustrator, EPS or Tiff file and provide a short designer biography and profile image for the website

The intellectual property of examples of work/portfolios submitted but not selected will remain entirely with the students who created them

Examples of work/portfolio entered must be your own original artwork, of which you hold and will maintain the copyright to

Selected students will be paid for ten hours work, at task rate two, via ArtsTemps. This is equivalent to the production of up to fifty sheets of gift wrap. If we decide to print more, we will contact you to discuss further payment

The commissioned designs will be used across UAL marketing and advertising materials to promote not just a shop and future competitions. You will be credited whenever images of your gift wrap are used

Production of the gift wrap will be managed by not just a shop

The gift wrap will be produced as a UAL exclusive product. A credit line will be added to the design, we will send this over for the student’s approval

The gift wrap will be sold on the online shop only and be used to gift wrap customers' orders online

Proceeds from the sale of the gift wrap in not just a shop, will be reinvested into UAL’s Careers and Employability department, which provides free support for students and alumni.

Privacy Notice

The information you provide below will be collected by UAL in order to enter you into the not just a shop gift wrap commission and for your work to be considered for commission of UAL-exclusive gift wrap to be sold online in not just a shop and used for gift wrapping customer orders online (GDPR legal basis 6(1)(b) ‘necessary for...entering into a contract’). The personal data and designs of unsuccessful applicants will be deleted within 2 months of the application deadline.
