  • Tate x not just a shop 2026

For the eighth year, not just a shop is partnering with Tate to give UAL students the opportunity to have their designs sold in Tate stores. This year we’re inviting you to create a poster design to be sold in Tate's shops (both in the galleries and online) from August 2026, and in not just a shop from October 2026.

    Deadline: Monday 11 May 2026, 10am.

We encourage applications from all disciplines.

    What we are looking for

Designs can be conceptual, illustrative, typographic, photographic or mixed media.

Designs should be appealing to the public and represent the spirit of Tate Modern, Tate Britain, the city and its communities. Entries will be judged on their originality and public appeal.

    Who can apply

Students currently studying at 1 of the 6 UAL colleges on a BA, MA, PHD or FdA level course.

    How entries will be judged

    • Designs presented to a high standard.
    • Creativity, uniqueness and a fresh approach to the brief.
    • Commercial viability, wide public appeal.

Priority will be given to students who have not previously won the competition.

    Number of designs per applicant

1 applicant can submit up to 3 different designs.

Please be selective when submitting your work. Ask friends to help edit if needed.

    To enter

Prepare your designs, following the criteria:

    • High resolution JPEG (300 dpi) with a max size of 1MB.
    • Designs must be 500mm x 700mm in either a landscape or portrait format with a 3mm bleed.
    • No key design elements (e.g. text) should be within 30mm from the bottom edge.

    Please note:

    • Do not send multiple colourways of 1 design. We will only put 1 forward if you do.

    After you apply

Winners will be contacted by Friday 5 July 2026.

The winning designs will be produced by Tate's in-house production department. The successful applicants will communicate directly with the department via email to provide Illustrator, EPS or TIFF files.

Copyright in the design will remain with the creator, while Tate will have an exclusive license to reproduce it for the current season. This means that the design should not be sold elsewhere through other retailers.

    The prize

Up to 3 winning students will each receive:

    • A £250 one-off design fee (payable on receipt of final artwork)
    • 10 printed copies of the poster
    • Professional photography for portfolio (from not just a shop)

If Tate decides to reprint your design, you will be offered a 6% royalty payment for each batch. Tate will contact you directly for this.

  • What makes a good poster design?

    Brief

Does your design represent and communicate the spirit of Tate Modern, Tate Britain, the city and its communities?

Commercially viable designs do not need prior context to understand the poster’s message.

    Audience

Your design should have a wide public appeal. Consider who Tate’s audience is and where the poster would be displayed in their homes.

    Colour

Colour can create a certain mood or theme and can highlight aspects of the design.

Please note that certain colours do not print well. For example, using too many darker colours might not stand out when printed. We recommend test printing to ensure your colouring is most impactful.

    Originality

Does your design reflect the spirit of Tate Modern, Tate Britain, London and its communities in a fresh and contemporary way?

View Tate's current range and shape your design to offer something different from what they currently sell.

    Copyright

To ensure your design has the best chance of being selected, please avoid including the following:

    • Existing artwork
This is an artist's intellectual property. It cannot be used commercially / in a design intended to be sold without permission from the artists. This includes artwork in Tate’s collection, as they are not the copyright holders.
    • Depictions of famous artists or people
This falls under personality rights for commercial products. They will have to be removed from the design.
    • Business logos
Any logo would need to have permission from the business to be included in any commercial design. Some businesses charge to be included, so avoid using any logos. For example, Transport for London (TfL).

Before you continue, do a final check

Ensure you’re putting forward your best design. Check if your design is the correct image size, includes bleed along the edge, has high image quality, readable text size (if included), finished colouring, and so on.

    • Students are welcome to collaborate on the design(s). In this case, the prize will be divided equally between them, should their design be selected.
