Introdution

UAL’s Black Creatives Hub is partnering with not just a shop to offer students and recent graduates (of up to 3 years) an exciting opportunity to have their illustration designs featured in the first ever UAL Black Creatives adult colouring book. The book will be sold online and in-store at not just a shop from October 2026, marking the beginning of Black History Month. 

Deadline: Friday 19 June 2026, 5pm

We encourage applications from all disciplines.

Who can apply?

Current UAL students or recent graduates (of up to 3 years) from any College, course and level who identify as Black or of mixed Black heritage.

What we’re looking for

Powerful, original illustrations that celebrate Black:

  • history
  • culture and identity
  • lived experiences.

To enter

Prepare your designs, following the criteria:

  • black and white
  • only solid, clear back lines suitable for colouring
  • high resolution JPEG (300 dpi)
  • maximum file size for the uploads: 5MB
  • file name(s) should contain the title of the design
  • design size: A4 or 21cm x 29.7cm in either a landscape or portrait
  • no text.

Number of designs per applicant

1 applicant can submit multiple designs (as many as you want).

Please be selective when submitting your work. Ask friends to help edit if needed.

How will entries be selected?

  • Designs presented to a high standard.
  • Design must be suitable for colouring.
  • Creativity, uniqueness and a fresh approach to the brief.
  • Commercial viability, wide public appeal.
  • Reflective of the theme of Black history, culture and identity and lived experiences.

After you apply

Winners will be contacted by Monday 29 June 2026.

Production of the Colouring Book will be managed by UAL’s Creative team. The successful applicants will communicate directly with the Black Creatives Hub team and UAL’s Creative team via email to provide Illustrator, EPS or Tiff files.

Copyright of the design(s) will remain with the creator, while UAL will have an exclusive license to reproduce it for the certain period. This means that the design should not be sold elsewhere through other retailers.

Winners’ prize

  • Your illustrations will be featured in the UAL Black Creatives colouring book.
  • £100 fee per selected design.
  • 2 copies of the final product.
  • Promotion of your work via UAL’s website and social media channels.

Terms and conditions

The competition is run by University of the Arts London of 272 High Holborn, London WC1V 7EY (“UAL”).

The competition is open to current students (including international students) and recent UAL graduates (up to 3 years), from all UAL Colleges and courses, who identify as Black or mixed Black heritage.

The competition is an opportunity for entrants to have their illustration designs (“Designs”) featured in the first ever UAL Black Creatives adult colouring book (“Colouring Book”) The intention is for the Colouring Book to be sold online and in-store at UAL’s not just a shop from October 2026, marking the beginning of Black History Month.  

By entering the competition, entrants will be deemed to be bound by and have accepted these terms and conditions. Agreement to these terms and conditions is given for the benefit for UAL and UAL shall have the right to enforce these terms and conditions. Failure to comply with these terms and conditions will give UAL the right to disqualify any entries.

The competition will run from 22 May 2026 to 19 June 2026 inclusive.

Designs should be commercially viable and may be required to be adapted to increase suitability (as reasonably agreed between UAL and the entrant).

Entrants can submit more than one (1) Design.

Entrants must submit Designs individually and not as part of a team.

Designs must be submitted as a high-resolution digital image.

The winner(s) will need to supply their Design(s) to UAL as an Illustrator, EPS or Tiff file and provide a short designer biography.

The winner(s) will receive a cash prize of one hundred pounds (£100) per selected Design and two (2) copies of the Colouring Book (the “Prize”).

Please allow thirty (30) days for payment of the monetary element of the Prize. The Prize may not be claimed by a third party on behalf of the winner(s).

UAL does not claim ownership of any intellectual property rights in any entries.

The winner(s) hereby grants UAL an exclusive, worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free licence to use, reproduce, display, publish and disseminate all or part of their Design(s) in print and digital form, for the purpose of producing ninety (90) printed units of the Colouring Book. If UAL wishes to produce a further run of the Colouring Book, UAL will contact the winner(s) to discuss an additional fee. The exclusivity referred to in this paragraph will end on the completion of the sale of all ninety (90) units of the Colouring Book after which point the winner(s) will be free to use the Design(s) elsewhere.

The winner(s) acknowledges that their Design(s) will be also used across UAL marketing and advertising materials to promote UAL’s not just a shop and future competitions. A credit will be given for any images used.

Entrants warrant that: (i) their entry is all their original work; (ii) they have not copied, in whole or in part, any third party work; and (iii) they have not granted any licence in relation to their entry other than set out above.

Entrants agree to:

  • irrevocably and unconditionally waive all moral rights in their entry which they may now or at any time in the future be entitled to by law; and
  • never assert their moral rights or make any public statement objecting to UAL’s use of their entry as permitted by these terms and conditions.

Production of the Colouring Book will be managed by UAL.

UAL reserves all rights to disqualify any entrants if their conduct is contrary to the spirit or intention of the competition.

Privacy Notice 

Purpose and legal basis

University of the Arts London (UAL) collects the personal data you provide in this form to administer your entry to a product open call or competition run in collaboration with Black Creatives Hub and ‘not just a shop’, and to assess your work for potential selection, promotion, or sale. 

This competition is aimed at current UAL students or recent graduates that identify as Black or of mixed Black heritage. If you choose to enter this competition we will collect your:

  • name, contact details (e.g. email address, school/college) and course details
  • competition entry/entries
  • ethnicity, as the competition is only aimed at current UAL students or recent graduates that identify as Black or of mixed Black heritage.

We use your personal data to:

  • administer and manage the competition
  • assess entries and select winners
  • contact you about your entry.

We process your personal data under:

  • Article 6(1)(f) – legitimate interests (e.g. administering and promoting competitions and open calls)

Special category data will be processed under:

  • Article 9(2)(a) GDPR – explicit consent

By submitting your entry and confirming your agreement, you are giving explicit consent for us to process any special category data included in your submission. Any special category data you provide will only be used:

  • for the purpose of assessing your competition entry, and
  • if you are successfully selected, you are expressly consenting to your name and relevant details being published on UAL websites, partner platforms, and social media channels to identify you as the creator. 

Data storage and retention 

Your data will be stored securely by UAL. Details of unsuccessful entrants will be deleted within 2 months of the closure of the competition or application process. Data relating to successful applicants will be retained for 6 years following competition closure.

Your rights

You have the right to:

  • withdraw your consent at any time
  • access the personal data we hold about you
  • ask us to correct or delete your data
  • restrict or object to processing.
